Advocacy Through Storytelling: Amplifying the Voices of Adults with IDD

At Life Services Alternatives, advocacy is at the heart of everything we do. It means standing alongside individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) and families as they navigate complex systems, speaking up for equitable access to services, and working for policies that protect rights and expand opportunities.

But advocacy isn’t just something done in meetings or through policy change—it’s lived through stories.

Advocacy Through Storytelling

That’s why we created the Mountain Climbers Podcast. Through this series, you’ll hear directly from people with I/DD and their families as they share their journey—their triumphs and everyday moments that make life rich with meaning.

Advocacy starts with listening. When we pause to listen, something shifts. A story told in someone’s own words has the power to change hearts in ways a policy paper never could. It helps us see the whole person. Lifting up the voices and experiences of adults with IDD so that our community understands the challenges they face, and the strengths, dreams, and contributions they bring.

Stories that Bring Us Home

That same spirit of empowerment shone at our event, Home Is Where the Heart Is, on May 2nd. It’s more than a celebration, it’s a moment to honor the community we’ve built together and the individuals whose stories continue to inspire us.

Every episode, every event, and every campaign reflects that stories are advocacy. They change perspective, strengthen communities, and lead us toward a world where every person with I/DD has the opportunity to live, work, and thrive in a home they love.

To turn these stories into lasting change, we launched Lead Us Home—an initiative dedicated to addressing the pressing need for inclusive, accessible, and affordable housing for individuals with IDD.

True community progress happens when we pull in the same direction, and that is exactly what Lead Us Home is designed to do. By connecting housing providers, service organizations, policymakers, and families, we are creating a shared voice powerful enough to break down the walls that keep inclusive housing out of reach. It takes a collective, bipartisan effort to reshape housing, and together, we are paving a clearer path toward a world where community inclusion is a reality for all.
