Finding Hope at Home: Steven’s Life at Hatikvah

For Steven, hope has a name—Hatikvah. The Life Services Alternatives (LSA) home, where he has lived for twelve years, carries a name that means hope, and it perfectly reflects the life he’s built there: one filled with friendship, laughter, and connection. When asked about living at Hatikvah, he smiled and says, “I get along with all my housemates. They’re my friends.”

Steven’s days at Hatikvah are shaped by the relationships and routines he treasures. Weekends often include outings with his housemates—trips to the mall, catching a movie, or enjoying lunch by the waterfront, where he loves taking photos of the people and moments that bring him joy. These experiences form the heart of his life at home.

During the week, Steven proudly works as a courtesy clerk at Safeway, a position he’s held for nearly a decade. His signature smile and willingness to help brighten the day for customers. In addition, he volunteers at Happy Dragon, giving back to the community in ways that bring him pride and purpose. His mom, Arleen, has watched him grow through both his work and his life at Hatikvah. “He’s more mature now—more helpful and generous. He’s always happy and always trying to help you out,” she shares.

Steven also loves spending time with his family, sharing simple, meaningful moments. He helps his mom with yard work, shops with her at Costco, and looks forward to Saturday lunches at his favorite restaurant, Happy Dragon. Visits from family friends brighten his weekends, filling his days with laughter, connection, and joy.

With the support and community at Hatikvah, Steven has built a life marked by independence, friendship, and fulfillment. Looking ahead, he hopes to continue working at Safeway and dreams of revisiting New York City to soak in its energy once more.

Steven’s journey is one of hope, belonging, and joy—a life lived fully in a home that celebrates him, the people he loves, and the connections that matter most.
