Finding Home: Tom’s Journey to Connection and Independence
Tom Sullivan is someone who appreciates the comfort of familiar routines and the joy of meaningful moments. Whether he’s sketching a new drawing, carefully finishing a puzzle, or enjoying a weekend bowling trip with his fellow housemates from Rivermark 1, these everyday activities reflect his calm presence and creative spirit. He also enjoys watching a fair share of John Wayne movies and is known for having one of the most contagious smiles in the house.

Before Tom found his way to Life Services Alternatives (LSA), he had always been surrounded by a caring and supportive family. For 70 years, he lived at home with his parents. As his mother’s health declined and entered hospice care, his family recognized it was time to support his long-held desire for more independence.
“Tom always talked about wanting to live on his own,” his niece, Melanie Tursic, shared. “We moved him into a supported apartment, and while he stayed busy with activities, he was lonely—especially at night. We realized he needed a place where he could be around others and feel truly connected.”

After working with the Regional Center, the Sullivan family learned about an opening at LSA’s Rivermark 1 home. From the moment they met the staff and toured the space, they knew it was the right fit. Tom moved in a year ago and immediately felt at home. He quickly bonded with the residents and staff and embraced the daily routine.
Tom’s relationships remain a central part of his life. He is still close with his family, who visit often, and enjoys the shared companionship of his housemates. Known for his upbeat personality, Tom is recognized by many in the Santa Clara community.
“He’s always been very social and outgoing,” Melanie explained. “He’s worked in different jobs—bagging groceries at PW and Lucky, and ringing the bell for the Salvation Army. Everywhere he goes, people recognize him. He even calls himself ‘Hollywood’ because he says, ‘everybody knows me.’”

Tom’s joy in connecting with others is matched by his appreciation for stability and familiar rhythms. With consistent support from the LSA team, he has the space to live with confidence, while being respected for who he is and what matters most to him.
Tom’s story isn’t about starting over—it’s about continuing to grow in an environment where he is seen, supported, and celebrated. His family is grateful to see him thrive in a place that feels like home.
