Steve’s Story: Finding Joy in Friendship, Sports, and Everyday Moments

When Steve moved into LSA’s Rivermark 1 home in September 2016, he quickly became a familiar and friendly face in the neighborhood. Born and raised in San Jose, Steve has always loved being social—he greets everyone he meets with a smile and enjoys chatting with friends and strangers alike. Life at Rivermark 1 gives him the chance to share his days with four housemates who have become like family.

Sports have always been a part of Steve’s life, and at Rivermark, he’s discovered even more ways to stay active and have fun. He’s a devoted 49ers fan, enjoys golf, and loves bowling so much that he even has his own bowling shoes. Bowling nights with housemates are a weekly highlight, full of laughter and friendly competition. On weekends, staff take him and his housemates fishing—a chance to relax, enjoy nature, and spend time together. Steve also loves movies, from Baywatch to Batman and Spider-Man, and nothing makes him happier than heading to the theater with friends.

But it’s not just the big outings that bring Steve joy—he treasures the everyday routines, too. He likes walking around the Rivermark neighborhood, visiting other homes, and helping with grocery trips to Safeway or Dollar Tree. These small acts, like carrying bags or picking out his favorite foods—pizza, chocolate cake, Burger King, Carl’s Jr., or a simple bowl of Cheerios—give him a sense of responsibility and pride.

Cheryll, Rivermark 1’s home administrator, has watched Steve grow steadily over the years. “He’s developed new hobbies, become more independent, and really enjoys helping with daily activities,” she says. “He looks forward to community outings, and you can see how much confidence he gains from trying new things and connecting with people.”

Steve’s life is a mix of adventure, friendship, and everyday joy. Whether he’s cheering for the 49ers, casting a line on a fishing trip, bowling with friends, or simply saying hello to a neighbor, he approaches each moment with warmth, curiosity, and pride. His story is a reminder that with connection, support, and a joyful spirit, every day can be full of possibility.
