Todd’s Story: Living with Purpose, Growth, and Gratitude
When you meet Todd Erickson, one thing stands out immediately—his optimism. Every morning, he’s up at 6 a.m., ready to take on the day with purpose. “I live for the moment,” he says. “I like striving because I want to be the best example I can be.”
That outlook has shaped Todd’s incredible journey—a journey defined by growth, independence, and an unwavering commitment to helping others.
Building Confidence Through Purpose
Todd joined Life Services Alternatives (LSA) in 2021, first as a resident and later as a valued team member. Today, he works as an Assistant Caregiver, supporting other residents by pushing wheelchairs, accompanying them on community outings, and offering friendly conversation.
For Todd, the work is more than a job—it’s a way to connect. “I do it because it doesn’t just improve me,” he explains. “It improves the environment that I’m around.”
He especially enjoys spending time with housemates like Tom, taking walks, and having meaningful talks about life and goals. His empathy, patience, and sense of humor make him a natural mentor to others—someone who leads by example.
A Journey of Learning and Leadership
Todd’s path hasn’t always been easy, but his dedication to personal growth has been extraordinary. After moving between several living arrangements, he eventually found the structure and encouragement he needed at LSA. Over time, he learned to balance independence with community—discovering that growth thrives when people believe in you.
He’s also turned his curiosity and creativity into lifelong learning. Todd attends film school, where he discovered a passion for voice-over work and directing. For Todd, film offers both structure and a creative outlet—a way to focus his energy and tell stories that reflect how he sees the world. After he graduates this December, he’s been invited to stay on as a volunteer instructor, helping new students find their own creative voices.
A Voice for Advocacy and Inclusion
Todd is more than a student and caregiver—he’s also an advocate and leader in the broader community. As a member of Advocacy in Motion (AIM), a group within the San Andreas Regional Center, he works alongside peers to teach others about self-advocacy.
His leadership extends beyond Santa Clara County. Todd has delivered speeches across California, including one before 300 people on the importance of voting. He’s also part of Options for All, where he made a short film and became the first student ever invited to write and deliver a graduation speech.
Through these experiences, Todd has learned that advocacy starts from within. “Not to be my worst advocate,” he says, “but to be a friend that accepts the human being that I am.”
Preparing for the Next Chapter
Todd’s next big milestone is just around the corner. He’s currently enrolled in Greater Opportunities’ Ambassador Program, a housing transition initiative that helps individuals with I/DD prepare for independent living. After attending classes in the evenings, he’ll graduate in January—and soon after, he’ll move into his own apartment for the first time.
As Todd prepares for this next chapter, he acknowledges that it’s a big step—but one that feels right. “Learning to live with silence — the art of being around in silence,” he says. It’s a practice that’s brought him clarity and confidence as he looks toward what comes next.
Even as he embraces this new independence, Todd plans to continue his work at LSA, where he’s made deep connections with residents and staff alike. For him, LSA isn’t just a workplace—it’s a community that has helped him flourish.
Finding Joy in the Everyday
Outside of work and school, Todd enjoys a range of hobbies that keep him active and inspired. He loves walking, hiking, and camping, and he’s an enthusiastic football fan. Music and movies play a big part in his downtime, as do motivational videos on YouTube—everything from military inspiration clips to reflections on personal growth.
“They give me an enhanced version of myself,” he explains.
Todd’s outlook is grounded in gratitude and mindfulness. He takes pride in small moments—whether it’s cooking breakfast, talking with a friend, or just sitting quietly with his thoughts. His balance of optimism and discipline has helped him become a steady, calming presence to those around him.
A Life of Meaning and Momentum
Looking back on how far he’s come, Todd credits his success to the combination of community support and his own determination.
For Todd, growth isn’t about achieving perfection—it’s about showing up every day with integrity and care. From caregiver to advocate, student to teacher, and soon-to-be independent resident, Todd embodies LSA’s mission of empowering individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities to live life on their own terms—with dignity, respect, and choice.
His story is a reminder that with encouragement, opportunity, and belief in one’s potential, independence isn’t the end of a journey—it’s the beginning of a fuller, more connected life.
